What Is a Salesforce Admin, Really?

Since the start of the pandemic I’ve been thinking about a career change. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but a good friend of mine has been working as a Salesforce Administrator for a while and thought I would enjoy it too. So, on this blog, I’m going to start documenting my experience with my recent career change. I’m not going to completely stop doing photo and video work, but I will probably be doing less of that in the future.

When I first heard the title “Salesforce Administrator,” I honestly had no idea what it meant. Was it IT? Was it support? Was it coding? The answer: sort of all the above.

Some days it feels like IT. Other days it's more like data management or tech support. And occasionally, it kind of feels like low-key coding. What I’m learning is that being a Salesforce Admin means being the person who makes Salesforce work for your team—whatever that looks like.

Right now, I’m focusing on learning the basics:

  • Getting familiar with the Setup menu

  • Understanding how objects, fields, and records relate to each other

  • Figuring out the difference between Standard and Custom objects

  • Building reports

It’s a lot. But it’s also kind of exciting.

I’ve already bookmarked Trailhead (Salesforce’s free learning platform), and I’m making my way through problems one by one. The learning curve is steep, but I’m trying to take it one feature at a time. I can tell there’s real power here—and once I get the hang of it, I think I’m going to like this.

If you’re just starting out, my advice is: don’t get overwhelmed. Salesforce is huge, but you don’t have to know everything at once. Bookmark Trailhead. And never be afraid to Google things (you’ll be doing that a lot).
